Winter running can be tough, but with the right gear, it can be an enjoyable and invigorating experience. I used to dread running in the cold, but over the years, I've discovered some key items that have made all the difference. I discovered the importance of windproof tights early on. I really like tights that have windproof fabric only on the front. I’ve found that some of the cross-country ski brands like Swix and Craft make some great options. They keep the wind chill off my legs without making me overheat. I've also had great luck with Janji Boreal Fleece Tights. They are perfect for New England winters, keeping my legs warm and comfortable even on the coldest days.
For my upper body, layering is key. I usually start with a merino wool base layer. Merino wool is fantastic because it's warm, breathable, and doesn't retain odors. I've found that it keeps me comfortable even when I'm sweating. On top of the base layer, I often add a Tracksmith Harrier or Brighton shirt, followed by a Nike Element 1/4 zip. This combination works well for temperatures down into the 20s.
For extra warmth, I sometimes use a Gorewear Infinium/Alpha insulated outer layer. However, I've found that it's important to choose something breathable to avoid overheating. I personally avoid puff tech items for running because they tend to trap too much heat. Breathability is key!

Don't underestimate the importance of protecting your extremities! Gloves and hats are essential for winter running. I often wear a pair of lightweight gloves and a beanie.
